AG’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit Arrests Two Caregivers

Two personal care attendants have been charged with Medicaid fraud for filing false claims, announced Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell.

Sybil M. Mashia, 46, of 100 Ormond Village Drive, Destrehan, surrendered for arrest on Thursday and was charged with one count of Medicaid fraud. Christi L. Moore, 36, of 113 Livas Lane, Schriever, surrendered for arrest on Monday and was also charged with one count of Medicaid fraud. Both women were booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Mashia and Moore are accused of submitting false timesheets to their employer, a personal care services agency in LaPlace, claiming to be providing personal care services to Medicaid patients at the patients’ homes even though the patients were actually hospitalized at the time. This resulted in the Medicaid program being falsely billed.

Personal care attendants are hired by Medicaid providers to care for physically handicapped and/or elderly Medicaid recipients. They provide caregiver services such as cooking, grooming, and bathing.

The charge of Medicaid fraud carries a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $20,000 fine, upon conviction.

To report suspected Medicaid fraud, please contact the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit at 1-888-799-6885.
