Caring for The Deceased After Hurricane Laura

BATON ROUGE, LA – Hurricane Laura was the strongest hurricane to hit Louisiana in 164 years and caused widespread damages in many of the State’s western parishes. Unfortunately, this devastation also included the disruption of numerous deceased and their final resting places. In response, the Louisiana Department of Justice has been leading the State’s cemetery recovery efforts.

From locating, gathering, and identifying displaced caskets and vaults, damaged tombstones, and even human remains to getting them to their appropriate places, the LADOJ has remained steadfast in these cemetery recovery efforts. While this very important mission will likely take significantly more time as Hurricane Laura’s devastation can be found all across Louisiana, Attorney General Jeff Landry wants our State’s people to know his office is here to help them with this.

“Coordinating the recovery, repairs, and funding can be a slow process; but it has begun and we are working with our great partners from all of the affected parishes to ensure Louisiana’s deceased are taken care of properly and respectfully,” said AG Jeff Landry. “If our State’s people need assistance with locating or repairing a loved one’s grave displaced due to Hurricane Laura, I encourage them to please contact our office by phone at 225-326-6056 or by email at cemeterytaskforce@ag.louisiana.gov.”
