BATON ROUGE, LA – Motor vehicles are the primary modes of
transportation for most Louisianians; and with car thefts occurring far too
often here, Attorney General Jeff Landry is offering tips to residents and
visitors alike to help prevent their vehicles from being stolen.
“In 2022, there were over one million vehicles stolen
throughout our Country; over 4,000 of these thefts took place in New Orleans,”
said Attorney General Landry. “We must be proactive in combatting the crime
plaguing our streets. I encourage everyone to take precautions so we can help
safeguard these personal belongings.”
Attorney General Landry offers the following tips:
- Park
in well-lit areas clearly visible to public. If possible, keep car in garage and always lock the garage
door to home.
- Never leave valuables in plain sight. If personal property must remain in vehicle, leave it locked in the trunk of car.
- Always lock doors and keep windows rolled up. Do not leave keys inside of car.
- Turn your vehicle off. Do not leave vehicle running if not in it.
- Utilize theft deterrents. Use horn alarms, steering wheel locks, and immobilizing devices, if possible.
In the event that your vehicle is stolen, contact law
enforcement as soon as possible. Be sure to have license plate number, make,
model, color, and VIN number. Also contact your insurance company within 24
hours.
